When patients at my Dale Road office in Modesto choose dental implants, one of the most common questions they ask is, “What should I expect after the surgery?” At Quality Dentistry, Dr. Wesley Wong and our team want you to feel fully prepared and confident before, during, and after your procedure.
When patients at my Dale Road office in Modesto choose dental implants, one of the most common questions they ask is, “What should I expect after the surgery?” At Quality Dentistry, Dr. Wesley Wong and our team want you to feel fully prepared and confident before, during, and after your procedure. While every patient heals a little differently, here’s what I usually tell my patients about recovery after dental implant surgery.
It’s completely natural to feel some discomfort after implant placement. Most patients describe it as soreness or tenderness around the surgical site rather than sharp pain. This is usually managed with over-the-counter medication, though Dr. Wong may prescribe something stronger if needed. Applying a cold compress in the first 24-48 hours helps minimize swelling. Patients are often surprised that these side effects are usually temporary and fade quickly as healing progresses.
Because your gums and jaw need time to heal, I recommend sticking to soft foods like yogurt, soup, smoothies, and mashed potatoes in the first few days. Avoid anything crunchy, sticky, or hard until Dr. Wong confirms it’s safe to return to your normal diet. Many patients are happy to learn that once fully healed, they’ll be able to eat nearly anything they enjoyed before.
Good oral hygiene is key to successful healing. I tell patients to brush gently around the implant area at first and rinse with a prescribed mouthwash or warm saltwater. This helps keep the site clean and reduces the risk of infection. As healing continues, we’ll guide you on when to return to your regular brushing and flossing routine.
Every patient heals at a different pace, but on average, the initial healing period takes a week or two. The deeper process of osseointegration usually takes a few months. During this time, you’ll come in for check-ups so Dr. Wong can monitor your progress and prepare for the final restoration.
I always remind patients that recovery is part of the journey to a healthier, stronger smile. With patience, proper care, and regular follow-up visits, most people heal smoothly and experience life-changing results with their implants.
While the idea of surgery can feel intimidating, most of my patients in Modesto are pleasantly surprised at how manageable the recovery really is. At Quality Dentistry, Dr. Wesley Wong and our team are here to guide you every step of the way, from your first consultation to your final restored smile.

I’m from New Mexico in California for a family reunion. I broke a crown called Quality Dentistry, they were able to take me in. Upon arrival they were very friendly and attentive. Natay was AMAZING very friendly explained what she was going to do and replaced the crown. If I lived here I would make Quality Dentistry my permanent dentist.

I started going to Dr Wong at Quality Dentistry in the early 2000’s and I’ve never wanted to change dentists. This practice keeps up with technology and hires qualified, friendly and professional staff members. I always know that my comfort and well being is #1 during any procedure I might have including a simple teeth cleaning process. I highly recommend this dental office.

I have been going here for 20years now! I absolutely love it. I enjoy getting my dental cleanings. My last hygienist had retired and now I have a new favorite hygienist, Rochelle. She and her assistant Julie are so kind and funny. Both super gentle and thorough with explaining things. Dr. Wong (Dale rd) and Dr. Du (Tully Rd) are the dentist I see and they’re awesome. Great chair side manners as well. Both offices have nicest staff and very clean rooms. My husband left his other dentist when we got married and now he always recommends Quality Dentistry to his side of the family.
