Every now and then, a moment in my practice reminds me just how powerful restorative dentistry can be - not just for someone’s oral health, but for their overall confidence and well-being. One of those moments happened recently, and it perfectly illustrates why dental crowns are such an important part of what I do.
Every now and then, a moment in my practice reminds me just how powerful restorative dentistry can be - not just for someone’s oral health, but for their overall confidence and well-being. One of those moments happened recently, and it perfectly illustrates why dental crowns are such an important part of what I do.
It was early in the morning when a long-time patient came in with a look of worry on his face. He had been chewing on something unexpectedly hard the night before and felt a sharp crack in one of his molars. He told me he barely slept, worried about the pain, the possibility of losing a tooth, and how quickly we could fix it.
When I examined the tooth, the fracture was deeper than he realized. A simple filling wouldn’t be strong enough, and leaving it untreated risked more cracks, infection, or even tooth loss. After talking through the options, I recommended a dental crown - a custom restoration designed to completely protect the weakened tooth.
I’ve always believed that patient reassurance is just as important as clinical skill, so I explained exactly what a crown does. It’s essentially a strong, tooth-shaped “cap” that fits over the natural tooth to restore its strength, appearance, and function. I told him that once we placed it, he’d be able to chew comfortably again without worrying about further damage.
We prepared the tooth, took highly precise digital impressions, and placed a temporary crown to shield it while the permanent one was being crafted. A short time later, he returned for the final placement. The crown matched his natural tooth perfectly - so well that even he had a hard time spotting the difference.
When he bit down for the first time without pain, he let out a deep breath and said, “I feel like I got my tooth back.”
Moments like that stay with me. Yes, crowns restore structure, function, and appearance - but they also restore confidence. And sometimes, that’s the part patients appreciate the most.
A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth. It mimics the shape, size, and color of a natural tooth and is made from durable materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia.
Crowns are used when a filling simply isn’t enough. They protect the tooth from further damage while giving you the ability to chew, speak, and smile comfortably.
In my experience, crowns are one of the most versatile and effective restorations available. I commonly recommend them in situations like:
1. Deep fractures or cracks
When a tooth is structurally compromised, a crown provides full-coverage protection.
2. Large cavities or broken-down fillings
If too much natural tooth structure is missing, a filling won’t hold up long-term.
3. After root canal treatment
Root-canal-treated teeth become more brittle, and crowns help prevent future fractures.
4. Severe wear from grinding or erosion
Crowns rebuild lost tooth structure and restore proper bite function.
5. Cosmetic restoration
Crowns can transform the shape, color, or alignment of a tooth when aesthetics are a priority.
6. Protecting teeth with weakened enamel
Patients with enamel defects or significant wear often benefit from the added strength crowns provide.
I’m from New Mexico in California for a family reunion. I broke a crown called Quality Dentistry, they were able to take me in. Upon arrival they were very friendly and attentive. Natay was AMAZING very friendly explained what she was going to do and replaced the crown. If I lived here I would make Quality Dentistry my permanent dentist.

I started going to Dr Wong at Quality Dentistry in the early 2000’s and I’ve never wanted to change dentists. This practice keeps up with technology and hires qualified, friendly and professional staff members. I always know that my comfort and well being is #1 during any procedure I might have including a simple teeth cleaning process. I highly recommend this dental office.

I have been going here for 20years now! I absolutely love it. I enjoy getting my dental cleanings. My last hygienist had retired and now I have a new favorite hygienist, Rochelle. She and her assistant Julie are so kind and funny. Both super gentle and thorough with explaining things. Dr. Wong (Dale rd) and Dr. Du (Tully Rd) are the dentist I see and they’re awesome. Great chair side manners as well. Both offices have nicest staff and very clean rooms. My husband left his other dentist when we got married and now he always recommends Quality Dentistry to his side of the family.
